Typescript of the Supreme Court opinion delivered by Justice William Joseph Brennan in the case of the New York Times Company v. Sullivan, for which the Supreme Court granted certiorari. The court reversed the decision by the Supreme Court of Alabama which had affirmed the Montgomery County Alabama Circuit Court verdict that an advertisement published in the New York Times which described Mongtomery, Alabama police maltreatment of Black students protesting segregation contained libelous statements that showed malice on the part of the newspaper. The suit was brought to the circuit court by L. P. Sullivan, the Montgomery, Alabama city commissioner of public affairs. Typescript is signed Wm. J. Brennan, Jr.
